Kedartal Trek

38 Km 7 Days 6-10 Grade - Easy to Mod. 4750 Meters. Dehradun Dehradun

Garhwal region of the Himalayas

The trek to Kedartal, also known as Shiva's lake, is considered challenging due to the rugged and rocky path right from the beginning. The trail presents trekkers with steep ascents, scree-covered paths, dusty terrain, and boulders, making it a demanding journey. The first day of the trek involves navigating a thin ledge on a 60-degree rock face, setting the tone for the complexity that follows, culminating in a steep summit ridge. Despite the arduous path, the trek offers a feast for the senses as it meanders through vibrant blossoms and lush meadows. The trek includes a few stream crossings over Kedar Ganga, adding to the adventure and providing opportunities to witness the raw beauty of the Himalayan landscape. The jewel of this challenging journey is Kedartal, a glacial lake situated at an altitude of 4,750 meters in the Garhwal region of the Himalayas. The lake is fed by the snowfall over majestic peaks like Mt. Thalay Sagar (6,904 m), Mt. Meru (6,672 m), and Mt. Bhrigupanth (6,772 m). Kedartal is revered in Hindu mythology as Shiva's contribution to Bhagirathi, a source-stream of the Ganges. The trek to Kedartal, starting from Gangotri, spans 17 km and involves a challenging ascent along the narrow Kedar Ganga gorge en route to Bhojkharak. The trail passes through scenic Himalayan birch forests, providing trekkers with moments of awe and serenity. However, the journey is made hazardous in places by falling rocks, high altitude, and segments of steep ascent, demanding resilience and determination from trekkers. As trekkers reach Kedartal, the lake unfolds like a blooming lotus in the midst of rising black-white mountains. The juxtaposition of the pristine lake against the rugged terrain creates a breathtaking scene that captures the essence of Himalayan beauty. The journey to Kedartal is not just a physical challenge; it is a pilgrimage into the heart of nature's grandeur, where every step brings trekkers closer to the divine landscape of the Garhwal Himalayas.
