The Adventurous Trek

The Sunderdhunga Valley trek is a gem among Uttarakhand's scenic treks, known for its breathtaking beauty and serene landscapes. Traditionally starting from Kharkiya, with Jatoli as the first camp, it is often referred to as the "Valley of Beautiful Stones" due to its mesmerizing surroundings. The trek provides stunning views of Maiktoli peak, Mrigthuini, Tharkot, and Panwali Dwar, creating a picturesque and memorable journey. While a new Jeep road now reaches Kharkiya, bypassing the initial campsite and saving time, the essence of trekking lies in experiencing the Himalayas and its natural splendor. The trail initially follows the path of the adjacent glaciers of Pindari and Kafni before diverging at the village of Khati. The trek encompasses dense forests, remote Kumaon villages, and the ravine of the Sunderdhunga river, leading to the beautiful campsite of Kathaliya, serving as the exploratory base camp for the valley. Kathaliya offers a stunning backdrop with some of the most beautiful peaks in the region. The trek continues to Maiktoli base camp, Balooni top, and Sukhram caves, each providing spectacular views that will etch themselves into your memory forever. A small hike from Balooni Top takes trekkers to Devi Kund, adding another layer of beauty to the journey. The name "Sunderdhunga" itself reflects the magnificence of the valley, translating to the "Valley of Beautiful Stones." The harmony of nature in this region is unparalleled, with every element standing out to express its presence, even the flickering flames of campfires. The trek to Sunderdhunga commences from the point that leads to Pindari, offering a seamless transition between the two enchanting destinations. To fully savor the beauty of Sunderdhunga glacier, it is recommended to embark on the trek between April to June and September to October. This immersive journey typically takes 8 to 10 days, allowing trekkers to absorb the tranquility and grandeur of this captivating Himalayan landscape.
